At Platte Hemp Company, we’re all about digging into the facts behind the plant—and today, we’re spotlighting a cannabinoid that’s gaining attention for its relaxing effects: CBN (Cannabinol). Often overshadowed by CBD and THC, CBN is emerging as a unique compound with special benefits, especially for sleep and pain.

What is CBN?

CBN is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that forms when THC ages and breaks down. That means older cannabis plants or improperly stored THC products may have higher CBN content. While it comes from THC, CBN is only mildly psychoactive, and its effects are often described as calming or sedative.

Researchers and cannabis users alike are taking a closer look at CBN—and they’re liking what they find.

  • CBN for Sleep and Relaxation

CBN has earned the nickname “the sleepy cannabinoid,” and for good reason. Preliminary studies suggest that it may enhance sleep quality, especially when combined with other cannabinoids like THC or CBD. One early study from 1975 found that CBN increased sedation when combined with THC (Karniol et al., 1975), and anecdotal reports continue to highlight its ability to promote deep, restful sleep.
  • Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief

Like its cannabinoid cousins, CBN also exhibits anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. A study by Zurier and Burstein (2016) noted that CBN may reduce inflammation and pain by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), particularly the CB2 receptor, which is associated with immune response.
  • Neuroprotective Properties

CBN has shown neuroprotective potential, which means it may help preserve nerve cells and brain function. In animal studies, CBN delayed the onset of symptoms in models of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), offering hope for more therapeutic applications (Weydt et al., 2005).
  • Antibacterial Potential

A 2008 study published in the Journal of Natural Products found that CBN is one of several cannabinoids effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as MRSA (Appendino et al., 2008). This points to possible future uses in combating bacterial infections—an exciting frontier in cannabis research!
